1975 schwinn chart Why Gears?

In recent years cyclists around the world have come to realize the advantages of bicycle gearing systems. Proper gear selection allows the average rider to expend a relatively consistent amount of energy even though terrain and weather conditions may vary. Here is a general breakdown of the various gearing system and how they can best applied to your cycling needs.

Coaster Brake...

Single gear bicycles are most comfortably used on level ground for short rider.

3-Speed Hub Gears...

3-speed gears are most comfortably used for short rides on somewhat uneven terrain. Low gear on the 3-speed hub can negotiate an occasional hill.

5-Speed Derailleur Gears...

With 5-speed derailleur equipped bicycle cyclist can begin touring moderate distances and can negotiate most slopes.

10-Speed Derailleur Gears...

10-speed bicycles are designed for touring. More sophisticated 10-speed equipment will allow the rider to travel longer distances with less effort. 10-speed bicycles are meant to negotiate hills without varying the rider's steady cadence.

15-Speed Bicycles...

Alpine gearing, as it is sometimes called, is primarily intended for cross-country or extremely long distance rides and is preferred for hill climbing.

This listing is a general explanations of bicycle gearing. FOr a more complete analysis of gearing system you may find a visit to your Schwinn Dealer helpful, or write for information to: Comsumer Relations Department, Schwinn Bicycles Company, 1856 North Kostner Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60639.

Proper Bicycle Fit and Adjustment
Proper Frame Fit
Rider MUST be able to straddle bicycle when standing
Proper rider Adjustment
Knee slightly bent
Handlebar stem approximately level with seat or slighty lower
Pedal at bottom position

The first step towards proper bicycle fit is selection of the proper frame. Schwinn bicycles come in a wide variety of sizes and most Schwinn lightweights are available with different frame sizes to ensure that the purchaser is able to buy a bicycle with a frame which is neither too large nor too small but just right.

A rider's proper frame size is usually the largest frame which he can comfortably straddle with both of his feet on the ground as in the illustration on left. Women can use the men's style frame to determine the approximate size of the corresponding ladies' model bicycle. Proper utmost in safety and handling. Once the proper frame size has been determined, the next step is to adjust the seat to its correct height. The most efficient and comfortable pedaling is accomplished when the rider's leg, while he is seated on bicycle, is not quite fully extended when the ball of the foot is on the pedal. The rider must be seated on the saddle and the pedal MUST be at the bottom position as shown in illustration on the right.

The handlebar stem should be adjusted to the same height as seat or slightly lower than the seats, as shown in the illustrations. CAUTION: At least 2 inches of both the seat post and handlebar stem must remain inside the frame and fork stem after adjustments are made. On Schwinn Bikes a maximum height marketing appears both on the seat post and handlebar stem.

STING-RAY and JUNIOR MODELS

On Sting-Ray and Junior models the rider's toes should touch the ground while straddling the seat. The handlebar grips must not be higher than the rider's shoulders when he is seated on the saddle. Proper fit is essential to your bicycle riding safety.

Shopping for a modern bicycle can be a confusing experience. As the sophistication and the variety of hi-performance equipment has grown, so have the question of just what is right or wrong for the rider. Basically, the answer is simple: It depends upon what sort of bicycle rider you are. How much will you use your new bike? What kind of terrain will you ride on? Schwinn-who makes over 60 diferent models- has just the right bike for you. From durable lightweight styles with electro-forged frames that will take the roughest roads to finely tuned lug-frame models that serious cyclist can ride for miles and miles without tiring.
What's best for you? Ask your Schwinn Dealer... tell him how you plan to use your New Schwinn...he'll advise you what's best.

1975 schwinn 10 Lugged Frames...

usually built of thin, lightweight chrome-moly allor tubing set in "lugs," held in rigid jigs and bronze welded or silver brazed by hand. Frequently made with "double-butted" tubing that is thicker at the ends and thinner in the moddle for added lightness. Lug frames are often found on lightweight touring and track bicycles.

Flash Butt Welded or Electro-Forged...

built on special machines that butt weld the tubes together under extreme pressure. Head and crank fittings are fitted with extrutions for stronger joints. Fine finishing of the welds provide the ultra smooth and luxurious finish of the final product. Electro-forging is extremely strong and durable. In effect, the frame when completed is one continuous piece of steel.

1975 schwinn 11

Just how important is the initial weight of the bicycle? Wherever serious cyclists gather you hear the discussion start... many consider it of utmost importance in the selection of a bike. However other factors besides weight alone make the difference in riding comfort and pleasure. Tires... their size, pressure, and rolling resistance make major differences in the ease of pedalling. Studies show, and most bike authorities agree, that consideration of good bearings, good brakes, and proper tires can be much more important than "weight" in just how a bicycle performs and feels to its rider. Visit your Schwinn Dealer... get his advice; choose the one that's right for you and the type of riding you'll enjoy.

Every Schwinn bike starts on an engineering draftsman's drawing board. Here, designers create new styles, new features, and new models... Schwinn precision starts here.

As an important as the initial design in the creation of a fine Schwinn bicycle is the qualit of the materials used in each and every part. From the selection of metals from durable steel to special chrome-moly alloys, to the constant inspection of components... nothing is left to chance.

Specialized equipment microscopically inspects the quality of materials that are used in the manufacture of Schwinn tubing.
Schwinn's research and test lab is unique... nowhere else in the Industry is such a tireless search carries on for bicycle improvement.

Four coats of the finest baked-on primers and enamel make the Schwinn finish world famous. Here, the second coat is applied electronically by specially designed equipment.

Wheels start here where the rim mill turns out Schwinn tubular rims... far stronger and more durable than ordinary single thickness rims.

Testing equipment of the most sophisticated complexity is used to maintain Schwinn Quality. Here, the image of the smallest part, sections of steel, and bearings can be magnified up to one hundred times.
Hubs are laced by hand. Spokes are inserted one-by-one. Schwinn quality you can count on.

Assuring product quality from start to finish is the Schwinn goal. Here, carefully selected steels are machined on automatic screw machines in Schwinn's own plant into bearing cups, cones and hub parts... Schwinn quality you can count on.

Derailleur gears, cogs, bearings, brakes... from Italy, England, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland. No expense is spared as Schwinn representatives scour the world to provide the serious cyclist with the masterpiece of the bicycle builder's art.

The heart of the bicycle, the single most important part, is the frame- and Schwinn hand builds Paramount frames from the finest Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing. Using low temperature gas brazing, the lugs and tubes are silver solder-brazed together to form the finest quality lightweight frame... the customer's specifications.

No detail is overlooked in the manufacture of the Schwinn Paramount. Hard top-grain leather saddles are pre-conditioned for added rider comfort by this ingeniuos machine... designed and built for Schwinn.

1975 schwinn 19

Once the welding is complete, all joints are smoothed with abrasives to provide a smooth, handsome finish.

Riding stability and riding comfort depend upon alignment and proper frame angles... continuous checking with measuring blocks follow the frame through its construction.

This special aligning table locks the frame in position so that all frame angles, proper alignment, and frame configuration meet Schwinn's exacting standards.
Nothing is spared to make the Schwinn Paramount the aristocrat of bicycles. Once the frame passes its rigorous inspection and testing it is ready to be painted. Multi-coated by hand to provide a deep, rich, long-lasting finish.

Perhaps no new bicycle design has ever gained such wide acceptance and popularity as when Schwinn introduced Sting-Ray designed bicycles in 1964. At first glance, the low slung design with the smaller wheels, higher handlebars, and raised seat may have seemed stange, and yet it is America's most copied style of bicycle. It's no secret... the unusual Sting-Ray design provides a new feel of responsive riding, a new level of performance, and a new variety of cycling enjoyment that has made it a standard among the country's young riders.

Frequently Schwinn Dealers are asked by concerned parents, "Isn't my child a little young for a two-wheeler?" Recognizing the protective interest of parents, Schwinn has designed the Pixie and the Lil' Tiger bicycle for riders as young as 2-years-old. The important factor is the size of the child. If he or she can manipulate a conventional "trike"... he or she can- with even greater safety- rie a two-wheeler fitted with training wheels. The possibility of upset it minimized, and the knowledge that the child has a bike like " big brother's" and sister's adds a measure of self-confidence. When the child is ready, graduation to a genuine two-wheeler is easy. Simply remove the training wheels (Cycle Aids) and away they go!
